William Hague visited Berwick-upon-Tweed today to support Anne-Marie Trevelyan's campaign to be elected the next MP for the constituency. The former Foreign Secretary who led the Conservative Party between 1997 - 2001, also used the opportunity to repeat his call for English votes for English laws and warn of the chaos of an Ed Miliband government propped up by the SNP.
William Hague met Anne-Marie Trevelyan and supporters at the Scottish border, before doing a walkabout in Berwick Town Centre and finishing off at the Barrels alehouse. He described Anne-Marie Trevelyan as a "fantastic candidate for Berwick-upon-Tweed who has been a great campaigner on health, education and the A1", "who will make such a superb MP". Describing the importance of the battle for the Berwick seat, he added; "this is one of the key seats which will decide the election and prevent the chaos of an Ed Miliband government propped up by the SNP and possibly the Liberal Democrats too".
William Hague repeated his call for fairness in the devolution settlement saying that; "there must be English votes for English laws". Anne-Marie Trevelyan has recently backed the calls for English votes for English laws, something which the Liberal Democrat candidate opposes.
