If you're looking for a town with a rich and fascinating history, Berwick-upon-Tweed should be on your list. This town has changed hands between England and Scotland numerous times, resulting in a complex and violent past that is still visible in its dominant Town Walls, old prison cells, and winding, cobbled streets.
One of the best ways to experience Berwick's beauty and history is by taking a boat trip on the Border Rose with Berwick Boat Trips. You'll sail beneath the magnificent Royal Border Bridge, spotting seals and dolphins along the way, while the skipper and crew share fascinating anecdotes about the town's past.
Berwick has plenty to offer in regard to beaches. Wander along the river banks for spectacular views, enjoy a round of golf at the local club, or go rock pooling at Cocklawburn beach.
If you're a book lover like me you won't want to miss Slightly Foxed bookshop, with their beautiful ceiling mural. They offer a wide range of quality second-hand fiction and non-fiction books for both adults and children. Whether you're looking for a classic novel, a rare find, or something new and exciting, you're sure to find it at Slightly Foxed.
After browsing for your next read at Slightly Foxed, head over to the Corner House Café for some well-deserved refreshment. This cosy café offers a wonderful selection of coffee and delicious cakes to enjoy while you dive into your new book. With a charming atmosphere and friendly staff, Corner House is the perfect spot to relax and recharge after a day of exploring Berwick. So grab a seat, order a latte and a slice of chocolate cake, and immerse yourself in a good book.
When it comes to dining, Berwick won't disappoint. The town has an array of restaurants and pubs lining the cobbled streets, each offering delicious seafood and other local specialities. The Leaping Salmon is one of my favourites, where you can grab a refreshing pint, and enjoy a delicious meal. Whether you're in the mood for a hearty burger or a fresh salad, the Leaping Salmon has something to satisfy everyone's taste buds.
And of course, for a deeper dive into Berwick's history, take a guided tour through the town. See the atmospheric jail cells in the Berwick Town Hall, get an insight into a soldier's life at Berwick Barracks, and take a haunting walk along the Elizabethan Town Walls. Last but certainly not least, make sure to visit the stunning Berwick-upon-Tweed medieval castle, which is the most northern of Northumberland's castles and is beautifully perched on a rocky outcrop over the river.
