Yesterday, Anne-Marie Trevelyan, MP for Berwick-upon-Tweed and Secretary of State for International Trade, held a virtual meeting with United States Secretary of Commerce, Gina Raimondo, to officially launch talks between the US and UK to address global steel and aluminium excess capacity, including the United States’ application of tariffs on imports from the UK and the UK’s retaliatory tariffs on certain U.S. exports to the UK.
Speaking of the talks, Anne-Marie said:
"The distortions from global steel and aluminium excess capacity pose a serious risk to market-orientated steel and aluminium industries in the United Kingdom.
"That is why I launched official talks with our friend and ally to discuss the impact on our industries, agreeing that the US and UK will partner to promote high standards, address shared concerns, and hold countries that practice harmful market-distorting policies to account.
"I will continue to prioritise UK jobs and businesses as Secretary Raimondo and I seek a resolution to protect our steel and aluminium industries from harmful market-distorting policies."
