Anne-Marie Trevelyan, MP for Berwick upon-Tweed, has urged any remaining EU citizens in Northumberland who have not yet sought Settled Status in the UK, to do so ahead of the scheme’s deadline of 30th June. The scheme, which opened to applications in March 2019, enables those EU citizens living in the UK to remain here post-Brexit without having to become UK citizens, conferring upon them the same rights and benefits as they are presently entitled to.
EU, EEA or Swiss citizens and their family members can apply to join the scheme to remain in the UK, as long as they were living in the UK by 31 December 2020.
Ms Trevelyan said: “I know a number of my constituents have already successfully applied to the scheme and found it simple and relatively quick, but I would of course be happy to help anyone who is having any difficulties with it.
“The scheme has been open for over two years to allow EU citizens resident in the UK ample time to apply to stay if they would like to. If you have friends or relatives who you think should have applied, please check with them, so they do not miss the deadline for applications closing.”
Irish citizens and those with Indefinite Leave to Remain do not need to apply. The scheme is free to use, and requires proof of ID and residence in the UK.
