Day 13: M is for Bank Holiday Mondays
This election campaign has managed to squeeze two Bank Holiday Mondays into its calendar, which means that for normal people for whom (unlike us candidates!) the election trail is not the be all and end all of their lives, both have probably been disturbed by rosette-wearing volunteers peering over garden walls and hedges asking how they plan to vote!
Perhaps not what folk had expected on a precious extra day off from the daily grind of work, commuting and school runs. But it is the case that our election system is built on voluntary shoe leather pounding the streets and talking door by door with voters to both encourage voting, and clearly in my team's case, to vote Conservative!
So it has been a great excuse for me today to simply enjoy some of what a Bank Holiday Monday in Northumberland can offer. From the food festival in Rothbury to the annual Puffin Festival in Amble, and the County Show in my neighbouring constituency of Hexham, there have been wonderful community events across the county. So many people have helped to organise these lovely gatherings, from cake & ice cream makers to advertising and setting up stalls. Many unsung heroes in our villages who quietly go about building amd sustaining community life.
Many thanks to all who give their time, whether to help promote democracy and electoral participation or to run fetes and festivals, shows and garden openings.
