I have had many constituents contact me about safety concerns regarding children and young adults using e-scooters.
E-scooters are classified as Personal Light Electric Vehicles, so they are treated as motor vehicles and subject to the same legal requirements, such as: MOT, licensing and insurance. As such, it remains the case that privately owned electric scooters are illegal to use on roads, pavements and cycle lanes, and those considering buying these devices should be aware of this.
Greater use of electric scooters could potentially bring enormous value to our national public transport framework. However, I understand that safety remains a concern for many.
Please be assured that I will continue to monitor this issue closely, but in the meantime, if you wish to discuss this - or any other issue - please do not hesitate to get in touch with my office.
