Anne-Marie Trevelyan, the newly elected MP for the Berwick-upon-Tweed constituency, has spoken of her delight at being elected, described it as a "exciting and humbling experience" and vowed to be a strong voice for all her constituents. She also spoke about representing one of the country's largest constituencies, which spans 1000 square miles, saying; "being the MP is about speaking up for, representing and fighting injustices for the whole of North Northumberland from Berwick right down to Linton and Lynemouth and across all the way to Elsdon".
Anne-Marie Trevelyan, became the first Conservative MP for the Berwick constituency for over 40 years, replacing the veteran, Liberal Democrat, Sir Alan Beith who has held the seat since a by-election in 1973. Anne-Marie Trevelyan secured 16.603 votes (41.1%, with Julie Porksen of the Liberal Democrats gaining 11,689 votes (28.9%). Ahead of the election on Thursday, some had predicted that the result in Berwick was too close to call but, it was an emphatic victory in the end with a majority of almost 5,000 and a swing of 9.58%, way ahead of the national average. Anne-Marie Trevelyan, had also taken a large chunk of the Liberal Democrat majority in 2010, when she first fought the seat.
After the result, she talked of her priorities for the area, "Getting the road started and making sure that we build the case for the investment for dualling the rest of the A1, to make sure the Northern Powerhouse comes as far as the border and holding George Osborne to his promise to create an Enterprise Zone so that Amble, Alnwick and Berwick can draw in new business and create jobs".
Anne-Marie Trevelyan, who has been a campaigner in the region for almost 10 years, setting up the Dual the A1 campaign in 2008 and the Broadband4Northumberland campaign in 2011, also pledged to work hard for all her constituents, regardless of whether they voted for her or where they lived; "I am here for everyone, always have been - that is what I do, I want to speak up for people who need help, representation or getting injustices sorted out".
She also revealed that she was looking to set up two constituency offices so she could best represent and cover, what is a vast geographical area and will continue to make herself fully accessible to residents.
