Anne-Marie Trevelyan, the Conservative parliamentary candidate for Berwick-upon-Tweed has challenged her opponents as to whether they personally will support the holding of a referendum on Britain's membership of the European Union.
Anne-Marie Trevelyan's call comes following news that Nick Clegg's Liberal Democrat candidate for Berwick has received a sizeable donation for her campaign from the multi-millionaire, property investor, Lord Oakeshott who is campaigning against an EU referendum. The former Liberal Democrat peer Lord Oakeshott, who was expelled from the party after an attempted coup against Nick Clegg, has given £300,000 to 15 Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidates and £300,000 to 30 Labour parliamentary candidates in an attempt to build an anti-Tory alliance and install Ed Miliband as Prime Minister.
Anne-Marie Trevelyan said; “I am firmly committed to fighting for a referendum on our EU membership. All candidates standing in Berwick, and elsewhere, must make it very clear to voters whether they support or oppose giving them a choice on Britain's future. Whether you are, like me, in the Euro-sceptic camp or passionately pro-European, this is a matter of democracy and currently, it is only the Conservative party who have pledged to uphold this by calling a referendum. I was five years old the last time British Citizens were asked for their opinion and it is high time, the people were consulted again”.
