Anne-Marie Trevelyan, Member of Parliament for Berwick-upon-Tweed has paid tribute to the outstanding efforts made by the council, emergency service workers and members of the community who worked bravely and tirelessly during the very challenging weather conditions that have hit Northumberland and the United Kingdom over the last week.
Anne-Marie said “It was truly incredible how our great community came together in adversity to selflessly help one another and tackle the extremely tough weather conditions.
There are so many stories of people providing food and shelter to travellers who were stuck or had to abandon their vehicles. It was truly a team effort form shops, pubs, local restaurants, big chains, supermarkets and many individuals who showed how effectively we can work as a community and the sheer generosity of northern spirit”.
“The council and emergency services have made truly remarkable efforts in servicing our community from clearing road to protecting and transporting vulnerable people to safe heavens, every member of staff has gone above and beyond the call of duty, and represent the very highest traditions of British public service. Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service and local farmers helped with transport for staff for the NHS and care services, and the Fire Service also provided transport to enable hospital patients who were ready for discharge and have no further care needs to get home to rural areas. The community and everyone involved in the efforts should be deeply proud of themselves and our county”.
“ I have received so many messages of thanks, stories of rescues and kindness, so thank you from everyone to all those sung and unsung heroes”.
